Chaplin's Soups and Subs was a rebranding of Chaplin's Chilli after being acquired by Levinsons Acquisitions.
Tom Chaplin, who founded the original restaurant, was not happy with the menu expansion and remained unaffiliated. Although the new restaurant did not serve chilli, they did offer a wide range of subway sandwichs, soups and chowders. The new restaurant was opened in Victorville, followed by locations in Pasadena and Eagle Rock
Chaplin's Soups and Subs was a sponsor for the 4th Annual On Cinema Oscar special, with Hank Friedmann reappearing as the buffet table supervisor. Although they were serving chowder on the night, it was allegedly similar to chilli. Legally, the restaurant could not refer to it as chilli.
After Chaplin's Chilli reclaimed the rights to the restaurant, Chaplin's Soups and Subs became Chaplin's X-press, still under Levinsons Acquisitions.
